Parasite Prevention

These are the preventative treatments that Cotati Small Animal Hospital sells in-house.

CANINE TREATMENTS

We strongly recommend taking preventative measures, regardless of how much time your dog spends outside, because of how easy it is for them to pick up an external parasites. Fleas and ticks are not only irritating to pets, but they can also transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and flea allergy dermatitis, while parasites like heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms can cause life-threatening diseases in pets if left untreated. Choosing the right preventive depends on your dog's lifestyle, environment, and condition of health, so consult with your vet to find the best option. Prescription medications are often more effective and safer than over-the-counter options, though they may come at a higher cost. Check out our options below or visit our online pharmacy, where we offer everything from oral and topical treatments to Seresto collars!

FELINE TREATMENTS

We recommend that all cats, including indoor ones, be on flea preventative. Even if fleas aren't currently an issue in your home, a single pregnant flea can cause an infestation if it hitchhikes on a mouse, rat, or even yourself. Flea allergies are also common, and just one bite can lead to discomfort and scratching. For this reason, it's best to be proactive with flea prevention. Even if your cat is primarily indoors, flea preventatives are recommended since fleas can also carry tapeworm eggs, posing an additional risk.

Cats that hunt or spend time outdoors often ingest parasites like worms when they consume prey such as rodents or birds. These prey animals can carry intestinal worms like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Once ingested, these parasites can live in your cat’s intestines, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. This is why it is important to use a preventive that targets a broad range of worms, or to have them dewormed as needed.
